National and State Licensing Exam Information

Upon completion of a professional veterinary or veterinary technician program, students are required to complete a national licensing exam. Veterinarians complete the North American Veterinary Licensing Examination and veterinary technicians complete the Veterinary Technician National Exam to practice in the United States. Students who graduate from a non-American Veterinary Medical Association accredited program are required to complete either the Educational Equivalency Assessment Certification Program or the Program for the Assessment of Veterinary Education Equivalence.

Professional Tuition Savings Programs

Some states without accredited programs in rural areas offer tuition assistance programs for veterinary schools. These include the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education for residents of some Western States and territories and the Southern Regional Education Board for residents of some southern states.

Funding Veterinary Education

Funding professional programs can be expensive and confusing. These resources can be helpful for navigating loan programs and scholarships. It is always recommended to meet with an academic financial counselor to select the best options for you.

Veterinary Technician Programs

There are many in-person and online accredited options for veterinary technician programs. Some offer an associates degree and some offer bachelor's. Many are accredited by the AVMA or are in the process. For Montana residents, Great Falls College is offering an in-person veterinary technician program.

Veterinary Programs by State

Veterinary professional colleges are either offered in state-run universities or private universities. State-based programs generally have a residency program for residents of that state and many offer cooperative programs with nearby states. State affiliated programs also accept non-resident students at an out-of-state tuition. Private institutions typically are open to residents of all states with a flat tuition rate. Use the dropdown menus below to see programs in each state.

Veterinary Colleges Outside the U.S.

Foreign programs are similar to private programs in the United States in that they offer international student tuition rates. All programs listed below are accredited by the AVMA. This means that students who graduate from these programs will be able to return to the United States to practice after completion of the North American Veterinary Licensing Examination. Students who graduate from foreign non-accredited programs will need to go through additional accreditation. Some accredited programs are not taught primarily in English.
